Day 2:
- Transfer to Tambo Báez (Baez´s dairy farm) (850 m - 2,788 ft),
our starting point. We will go up the Casa de Piedra Creek for about
3 hours until we get to Puente Colgante (Hanging Bridge). The trail
continues going up the valley, and then gains height in a slope
called "el caracol" (the spiral). In about four hours more we arrive
to the hut (1,600m - 5,249 ft), at the banks of Jakob Lagoon, which
is still frozen by this time of the year.
.
The way to Jakob mountain hut runs along the Casa de Piedra Creek´s
valley up to its sources in Jakob Lagoon. The 18km-trail (11 miles)
slowly ascends surrounded by two mountainous chains. Deeper into
the valley and right inside the forest, the gradient changes and
becomes steeper in what is known as "El caracol" ("the spiral").
At the beginning the vegetation consists mainly of bushes, then
we find a magnificent lenga forest and finally, very near the hut,
the lenga trees become bushylike..
